Default Which evolution?(Pets)

Hearty, Elder, or Dire?
I keep hearing how pets are priority targets. But at the same time, can deal amazing damage output.

With Hearty they may survive after being priority target, but lack offense.
With Elder, you really gain no advantages/disadvantages.
And with Dire you get more offense, yet the pet has less HP.

What would you recommend? I was thinking to get the elder, since it is well balanced.

IMO "playful" is really the best when you consider gain/loss ratio, but you can't keep it on your pet. So "elder" would be the best decision although it is the hardest. Hearty and Dire are easy, hearty can be easily obtained by dragging your pet wherever, and dire can be easily obtained by a death-leveing trick. Sure you could get the same effects of Elder by taking a pet on an SS/LB run and having it sustain zero damage and give out zero damage from five to twenty, but then it technically never evolves. Same stats, except it won't grow and won't say "Elder".

Anyone have tips on how to get a pet to Elder easily?

i like elder also.
@ fallen: level it to its first evolution to aggressive, then just take it with you everywhere til it turns elder.

Dire, more damage and the lower health means it's more likely that aggro falls on them.

if your going beastmaster which im guessing you are since you brought up this thread, i would definately say dire. more damage is plus, and if you pvp with a pet they hardly ever get attacked so lower health wouldnt mean much on them. plus lower health in pve means higher target priority to the AI, taking pressure off you and your teammates. and pets dont get death penalty in pve so if they die hey just res em again.

Actually, if you go full beast master your skills can trigger hits in the 150-200 range on a level 20 target.

Dire is without doubt the best.
  • Aiming to do damage? Dire obviously better
  • Using pet to generate corpses? Dire obviously better
  • Probably some truth in the "lower health attracts more aggro" comment, although it's more complicated than "ai attacks the party member with the lowest health"

Hearty for the following reasons the more health the better and the real damage comes from the attacks just like sins imo

Pets arent used for mms anymore cause they dont leave corpses to exploit after battle

Have a look here: A guide to pets, by Jenosavel and Epinephrine it's older and in parts outdated but still gives you almost all you need to know about you and your pet.

My take on it is almost always go for Dire.

Why?

The lower health gets the AI to target your pet first and in most cases the best use for a pet is as a meat shield with decent auto attack DPS. Especially in area's without Death Penalty (PvE or Hero Battles). The only reason to go for higher health would be for your pet not to die so you don't get the black out effect ... but well with a bit of an watchful eye on the pet this shouldn't be a big issue. Only if you run adrenaline skills (Thumper) a pet death is a real problem, but even then I'd go for dire.

Have fun!

I like dire. Elder is pointless. Hearty is pointless. If someone is attacking you pet, its more efficient to let it die and res it then to heal it. Soooo... less health means it gets back up faster. Also the extra damage is nice.

Dire if you must, but pets are useless and a waste of skills for obvious reasons.

Last I checked they are dps machines of hell, with the possibility of dealing over 200 damage to level 20 80 AL enemies, and corpse fodder for BUH?
Of course, you could be a PuGer who stereotypes the professions and sticks to a trinity, while being ignorant

Ignorant? Its you that's being ignorant here. And a PUGer? I own no such hound.

Dealing over 200 damage, no, but pets can do some nice damage.

But rangers are more condition/interrupts than damage.

hmm, i'm noticing a pattern with you.
i imagine if someone made a bow ranger build that could deal 753 armor-ignoring dps you'd say the ranger should interrupt/condition spread instead because that's what they're supposed to do :/
morale of the story: sure, pets are bad, but not because rangers are supposed to do other things. it's because they're bad.

Pets are bad as a build dedicated solely to them (apart from the enraged lunge build, and even thats not great). As support they can be quite nice addition to damage.

And I'm noticing a pattern with you also, your excessive ignorance and idiocy that I'm always fending off.

If a ranger could deal 753 armor ignoring dps, than I can assume that rangers are horribly imbalanced.

And what I mean by "supposed to do" is that your a lot better off being something more useful than a cheap gimmick.

And I never said pets were bad because rangers are supposed to do better things. Its because they suck and have really no use to the rangers current meta.

101 max damage is pretty terrible actually. But your not getting the point. I'm not talking about whether a ranger can kill someone in 1v1, I could care less. What I'm saying is rangers are A LOT better interrupting and spreading conditions.

Its what your class is made for.

And also, your the stereotype of an ignorant idiot. <:

You'd rather keep on posting nonsense that helps nobody.

PROTIP: Don't post at all.
